  • How Do I Care For Stained Glass?

Start with a microfiber towel to remove any dust or dirt.

If a few spots remain, use distilled water to dampen your cloth and spot clean.

If residue still remains use a cleaner that is free from ammonia, vinegar, or abrasives. Typically an all natural dish soap fits that description.

Never use a cleaner that includes alcohol , vinegar or ammonia. Those cleaners may damage the solder.

However if your stained glass has become oxidized or corroded ( spots that look like white mold) Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on the area then apply an all natural dish soap and gently scrub in a circular motion. do this to both sides of area. once dry use a polishing compound.

    or

Try a small piece of Never Dull or another non-abrasive type of silver polish. Gently rub until the oxidization/corrosion is removed.

  • What Types of Glass Do You Use and Why Are There Some Imperfections?

Imperfections: Stained Glass often has small imperfections as a result of the glass making process.

Cathedral and New Antique Glass is the transparent glass that people are most familiar with and comes in a wide range of colors and textures such as: water glass, Baroque, and striated New antique.

Opalescent glass is an opaque glass that you cannot see through and is either one color or a mixture of streaky colors.

Semi-Opaque Glass is partially see through and is usually a wispy color swirled with white or another color.

Iridescent Glass is a glass that has been treated with a metallic oxide on it's surface.

  • Copper Foil Technique

With the copper foil technique, also know as the Tiffany Method, each individual piece of stained glass is wrapped in a very thin piece of adhesive backed copper foil. The copper foil is adhered to the edge of each piece and overlaps an area just over the front and back of the individual glass piece. The copper foil is necessary because the solder does not stick to the glass itself, rather it adheres to the copper foil.

After each stained glass piece is wrapped in foil it must be smoothed and crimped over the edges. First with the artists fingers, then with a tool know as a fid (white tool shown in picture below)

Once the copper foil is firmly attached, each piece is given a final review and any unaligned foil is carefully removed with an etching knife.

Finally the glass is ready to be reassembled and soldered.

My choice of solder is Lead-Free with a pewter finish.

What is the Copper Foil Technique?
  • Why is there Grease on some of your artwork?

I include repurposed bicycle parts in many of my creations. For some, the residual grease is part of the overall aesthetic or feeling that I am trying to invoke. For others, the grease is almost entirely removed because it is not part of the desired effect.
